Peter Smith

Mentor

“I have spent a lifetime accumulating knowledge. Some of it useful and practical and some of it special to me because of the circumstances during which I acquired it. I find it gratifying to be able to pass on that knowledge to younger generations who are eager to learn. It is like reliving that learning experience all over again.” - Peter H. Smith

Mr. Peter H. Smith was born in Vermont. A decorated army veteran, he grew up in the midst of President Nixon’s rise and fall. His army and legal training and experience in this era gave him a particularly strong bias on the importance of ethics, the sense of right and wrong, and the need for environmental protections.

Pete’s legal experience ranges from a private practice in Atlanta to Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Heritage Environmental Services Company in Indianapolis and Monsanto Company in Saint Louis, Missouri. He specialized in environmental law ranging from legal interpretation, compliance, permitting, advocacy, and environmental, safety, health audits. He also counseled in the areas of product liability, acquisitions, sales and personnel programs and audits.

Pete has a B.A. from Indiana Unveirsity, where he also received M.B.A an d J.D degrees. Pete is a member of the Missouri Bar (inactive), the Georgia Bar (inactive), past Vice Chair of American Bar Association Water Quality and Corporate Counsel Committees. He has been a frequent speaker at ABA and other environmental conferences and past contributing editor to the ABA Environmental Law Year in Review.

Pete is an avid bicyclist, a Docent at the Nixon Library and still continues his legal habit of excessive reading. Pete actually does the daily practice of “what you don’t use, you lose.”
